What is fiMUG ry.
Finland Macintosh User Group fiMUG is a non-profit organization founded by people interested in using Apple computers, applications and devices. We have regular user meetings, courses and events. In addition to our WWW-pages we publish a quarterly newsletter “Kotapora”. As an independent and non-commercial organization, we are an important source for non-biased information and peer support.
AppleGarden is a bulletin board system maintained by fiMUG since 1992. The system is based on FirstClass which has a Finder like graphical user interface. A web interface is also available.
The members of fiMUG discuss different fields of life – including, of course, Apple products. In addition AppleGarden contains gigabytes of shareware and freeware for Mac OS X and older systems, some of which is no longer available elsewhere.
The history of fidisk begins in 1999. The iMac had been introduced with just a read only CD-ROM drive and members of fiMUG ry. needed a way to transfer large files. The first server operated with AppleShare IP, but Mac OS X Servers were on their way in. Currently every member can use 5 gigabytes of disk space and 500 megabytes for email storage. Members can host their own web pages on fidisk.
Hopeinen Omena [hopeinenomena.net] is the first large completely web based Mac forum in Finland. Hopeinen Omena was established in 2004 and since May 2008 it has been operated by fiMUG ry. We also have good connections to the Omenamehu.org, which is an other Mac forum in Finland operated by volunteers.
Events, excursions, newsletter…
In addition to online services, we have also more traditional meetings: fiMUG ry. organizes MUG evenings, courses and excursions. Our quarterly newsletter Kotapora (“tube style apple corer”) contains interviews, news, product reviews and a calendar.
fiMUG ry. has over 900 members around Finland and the organisation is a registered Apple User Group. The membership fee is 38 euros for 12 months and there are discounts for students, pensioners and young persons. Companies and institutions can also join and support fiMUG ry.
Chairman of the board is Antti Niemi and the members of the board are (2008):
